Positive Choices

Positive Choices is a new Volunteer Centre Newcastle project launched in June 2009 and funded by Northern Rock Foundation and the Department of Health until March 2012.

Positive Choices aims to give support to those people who would like to volunteer than might have issues around confidence, anxiety, depression or any other mental health issues which might stop them from thinking about volunteering as a positive activity.

At Positive Choices Gemma Finch, the dedicated worker for the project, will talk to you about what volunteering you want to do, and how it can be achieved. We will look at your barriers and plan how we could overcome these.

Adam and Karen from the team can also talk to you and help select volunteering that you may be interested in.

We know that sometimes volunteering for the first time can be a daunting experience, so these are the things we can help you with:

- Talking about barriers

- Searching the –‘do-it’ website

- Matching you up with a buddy if needed

- One to one support (making telephone calls, contacting volunteer coordinators etc)

- Journey planning

- Helping you to find references

- Explaining the CRB (criminal record bureau) and ISA system (vetting and barring scheme)

- Discussing benefits and volunteering

Volunteering is a great opportunity to develop new skills and gain confidence. These can be gained through one off taster events, ongoing volunteering, or by supporting others through Positive Choices once you have gained that confidence.

Our first group volunteering was Make a Difference Day 2009. You can read more about our fantastic volunteering day here . If you would be interested in future taster sessions, please contact us .

If you would like more information about Positive Choices you can ring us or ask a support worker or someone you trust to ring us.
