Gap year volunteering

Many young people are attracted to the idea of doing some volunteering either the year before or the year after university. Most people who consider this option will look at full time volunteering opportunities in the UK. These opportunities often offer meals and accomodation in return for the time you give.

Our Centre also occasionally gets asked about full time volunteering opportunities abroad. We do not have any specific information on opportunities abroad however we would recommend the following:

1) Read the information on the DirectGov website relating to planning a Gap Year.

2) Talk to your University Careers Service - they should have a few resources available for you to look at.

3) Do some research online - type 'Gap Year Volunteering' into a search engine.

4) If you choose to opt for a paid for Gap Year package please ensure you use a reputable provider - do not just rely on a company's website to find out how good the gap year experience will be.

5) Find out from other people who have volunteered during their gap year. Ask what they would do again, and what they would do differently if they were repeating their year.
