Equality & Diversity

Creating a work place where everyone feels that they will be treated fairly, with dignity and respect is important for any organisation, but even more so for ones with volunteers. This course will look at the process for creating a culture which will recognise differences and value them as strengths.

This course led by Justine King from BECON explores issues around equality and diversity in volunteering and the workplace, utilising experiential exercises to explore the various equality concepts, including understanding equality and diversity; understanding culture, race and ethnicity; appreciation of diversity and implementing it; knowledge of current legislation; and, examples of good practice.

Using Volunteers for the First Time

This course is being facilitated by Volunteer Centre Newacstle and will cover what you need to know to start using volunteers within your organisation. It will be tailored to suit the needs of those attending but will include information on volunteer policies; creating volunteer roles; paying expenses;forms and processes; and, induction. The session will also very briefly touch on recruitment, registration and support systems.

Volunteers and the Law

Tuesday 11 December 2007 10am - 4pm Cost (including lunch) NCVS members £50 and non members £65 Closing date for bookings 20 November 2007

This session run by Mark Restall, head of information from Volunteering England,gives an introduction to and overview of the legal issues involving volunteers. The emphasis is on practical knowledge, giving participants an understanding of the danger areas - and how to avoid them. Topics include health and safety, benefits rules, copyright, criminal record checks and avoiding creating employment relationships.
